Biological Odor Control Systems
ECS offers biological solutions for a number of treatments. We use both Biofilters and Biotrickling Filters for different applications.
Here’s how they work:
Biofilters
Biofilters comprise inorganic media or in-ground, concrete or modular fiberglass reinforced plastics (FRP) vessels.
Biofilters use naturally occurring microorganisms to treat odorous compounds. ECS’ Bio-Pure media creates an ideal structure for allowing the biomass to grow and thrive, feeding off of the compounds in the foul air stream.
Biofilters can treat a wide range of odorous contaminants and their respective concentrations.
Biofilters can handle moderate concentrations of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S ).
Typical Design Considerations for Biofilters
- ~25–50 ppm H2S
- <40 ppm Ammonia (NH3)
- A typical Empty Bed Residence Time (EBRT) of 30–60 seconds
ECS’ Bio-Pure Inorganic Media
- We utilize non-compacting media with time-released nutrients.
Biotrickling Filters
Biotrickling Filters also employ naturally occurring microorganisms. Autotrophic organisms work to oxidize sulfides in the lower portion of the media bed, while heterotrophic organisms can work to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the upper portion.
Single pass irrigation utilizes plant water and an intermittent addition of nutrient-laden solution to spray over the top of the media bed.
Recirculating the irrigation water allows for faster acclimation of the biomass at initial startup or when the system has been offline or dormant.
ECS designs Biotrickling filters for foul air streams containing high levels of H2S.
Typical Design Considerations
- 10 ppm to over 1,000 ppm H2S
- Typical EBRT of 12–20 seconds
- VOC treatment possible with higher EBRT
